I love mathematics. This is a good book for those who like mathematics and wish to learn more.

Este libro sigue la línea original de Juegos de Mente, aquella revista emblemática de los '80. Plantea ideas, curiosidades y matemática recreativa en la línea de Martin Gardner. Pero a diferencia de otras publicaciones de esta editorial tiene una estructura de capítulos por tema (matemáticas del pasado, música, computadoras, etc.) por lo que no se limita a ser un compilado de misceláneos sino que tiene una ilación (sólo hacia el final se termina convirtiendo en un rejunte de problemas de pensami Este libro sigue la línea original de Juegos de Mente, aquella revista emblemática de los '80. De esta relectura disfruté la aparición del dado como uno de los primeros generadores de números aleatorios, el Teorema de Fermat -que Andrew Wiles había recién probado al momento de la edición del libro-, las ideas de Galileo sobre la proporción (un humano gigante sería inviable) y una sección bastante extensa sobre la música y la matemática.

Me pareció muy interesante el abordaje del hipertexto que hoy nos es tan natural pero que en esa fecha (en la que aún no había salido la Internet comercial) era experimental. Se entendía que el lector tenía que ir armando la historia al saltar entre los enlaces, casi un Elige tu propia aventura en formato multimedia. También aparecen el ciberespacio, los ciberpunks y la criptografía, hoy más vigentes que nunca a partir del whitepaper de Bitcoin de 2008 y la explosión de las blockchains y criptomonedas.

Un capítulo muy disfrutable es el de Buckminster Fuller porque repasa muchos de sus aportes a un nivel de detalle que no vi en otras obras. Menciona ya más al pasar otros temas atractivos como la lógica difusa, la teoría del todo y las supercuerdas.

این کتاب وجوه ریاضیاتی طبیعت رو نشون میده و در ادامه توضیح میده چطور ریاضی در معماری، مهندسی، هنر، موسیقی و غیره نقش داره. اخر کتاب با یک سری معما تموم میشه. در کل کتاب بدی نبود اما جذابیتی زیادی نداشت.

Độc giả của những quyển sách nói về toán học thường than không có sự liền lạc, mình thấy đúng, thà ôm quyển lịch sử toán học thấy có vẻ êm xuôi dễ nuốt hơn.
1 và 2 là hai số tự nhiên liên tiếp, xem ra là liền mạch đấy; nhưng nói vậy là bạn qua cả một mớ hỗn độn trong đó. Thế nên nếu gặp quyển nào viết về toán học thì cứ than như mình hén!
Trong toán học, số học vẫn luôn là phần lý thú nhất, khó nhai nhất; nhưng nó lại ít ứng dụng thực tế so với các phần còn lại. Chính vì thế, chương trình toán ở VN chỉ đem vào giới thiệu có một ít nhúm ở lớp 6 xong im luôn. Nhắc đến số học thì không thể thiếu cái định lý (nói "dóc") cuối cùng của Fermat.
P/s: Toán học có chứa cả một thế giới trò chơi giải trí ở trong đó. Và đừng mong khám phá thế giới ấy trong sách giáo khoa hiện nay nhé! :D ...more

Currently, Pappas is a mathematics educator and consultant. She received her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and her M.A. from Stanford University. She became a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) in 1967, when she began teaching high school mathematics. Over the years, she has taught basic math, prealgebra, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, precalculus, and calculus.

Through her studies and research, Pappas has developed products that address mathematical ideas, and she has written numerous books, both for the general public and for educational audiences.
